Crankbait Bass Fishing

If you are used to fishing with a jig then you will find that fishing for bass with a crankbait completely different. Fishermen that employ a jig regularly, will be aware that the way in which a jig lure works largely relies on the input of the user. With a crankbait lure, however, its action is in built. This is achieved by a lip on the face of the crankbait. The size of this lip will dictate at which depth the lure will dive to. When fishing in stretches of water that have a lot of weed and reed growth, the crainkbait’s action will assist in keeping the three hooks upright thus avoiding possible catching up in the vegetation that may lay on the riverbed, which is ideal for the bass angler.

When fishing for bass using a crankbait, there will be a learning curve, however, you will soon become an expert at casting it out then reeling it back in again. Some crankbaits will allow long distant casting due to their weight and the method of cast and reel back in, facilitates a large fishing area. The crankbait lure is designed to mimic the movement of prey on the river or lake bed so it is important that it traverses the water without dragging on the bottom but still appearing to have life to fool the fish into thinking that its a free meal. Try to vary the speed at which you retrieve the crankbait, allowing it to, sometimes, move quickly and at other times slowly or even stop and settle to give the appearance of prey trying to evade capture and giving the bass time to strike between your retrieving motions.

Choosing to use a slow action rod with a crankbait lure is the better option, as casting distances can be greater permitting the coverage of larger areas of water during retrieval and also a slow action rod will help to soften any jerking that may cause the hook to tear from a captured fish’s mouth.

Using a crankbait can be a very rewarding way of angling and as they can be used in many situations you can build up quite a kit of the selection of crankbaits available. Once you become experienced with using a crankbait you will find that you feel more in control of your quest to fool and tease the fish into going for your hook.
