The 513-pound (233-kilogram) fish was the priciest since 2001 when a 440-pound (200 kilogram) tuna sold for a record 20.2 million yen ($220,000) at Tokyo's Tsukiji market.

The gargantuan tuna was bought and shared by the owners of two Japanese sushi restaurants and one Hong Kong-based sushi establishment, said a market representative on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to disclose the information.

Caught off the coast of northern Japan, the big tuna was among 570 put up for auction Tuesday. About 40 percent of the auctioned fish came from abroad, including from Indonesia and Mexico, the representative said.

Japan is the world's biggest consumer of seafood with Japanese eating 80 percent of the Atlantic and Pacific bluefins caught. The two tuna species are the most sought after by sushi lovers.

However, tuna consumption in Japan has declined because of a prolonged economic slump as the world's second-largest economy struggles to shake off its worst recession since World War II.

"Consumers are shying away from eating tuna … We are very worried about the trend," the market representative said.

Apart from falling demand for tuna, wholesalers are worried about growing calls for tighter fishing rules amid declining tuna stocks.

A group of us went out for Blues and Stripers aboard the Right Hook Charter boat (Niantic CT) and had a great time. I am not sure some or all charter boat Captains work as hard as this one, but this boat will not stop hunting the fish until you are 100% satisfied. Our group was extremely impressed with the knowledge of the crew and their willingness to put up with all of my rookie saltwater questions. I felt they spent a considerable amount of time helping me better understand the finer details of the graphs, tide, lure selection etc. I also believe that we caught our fair amount of fish to be had for the conditions. I like many others do not have the time available to sneak out and fish saltwater so when we get a chance it is worth it to go with a knowledgeable group.

Our creel for our group of six was 5 Keeper Stripers and Many Nice sized Blues.

A few of our pics are located on the home page in the catch of the day section.

Thanks

Tide changed at 1:45 and the rip made up about 30 minutes later. The Ol' Gent hooked into an 8 pounder on the second drift!!!

Boated three more in the next two hours. Action was slowwww. Boat traffic was light.

Air temps mid 70'd with progressively cloudy skies

FishFinder on California Ocean Fishing - All About Barracuda

Pacific Barracuda (Sphyraena argentea), now the most common big predatory fish in Southern California, is a success story in conservation efforts. Aside from the banning of gill nets, the only efforts made to return the Barracuda to previous common numbers was the imposition of a 28" minimum size limit on these toothy game fish. This allowed almost all barracuda to breed. They get up to 4 feet long but are commonly less than 3 feet. A 4 footer will only weigh about 20 lbs since the fish is so long and thin. Most keepers are in the 6 to 10 lb class.

Barracuda occur throughout Southern California and range from the surface to deep water. Though their main haunt is the fringes of the kelp beds where they stalk unsuspecting bait fish and ambush them as they wander away from cover, they often sweep through inshore flats areas chasing schools of bait. The fertile flats areas where Sand Bass breed attract many small bait fish and of course, where there's prey, predators won't be hard to find.

Though the Atlantic (Great) Barracuda can sometimes be dangerous, the Pacific Barracuda is completely harmless in the water. They're not a threat because of their small size and habit of only striking what they can eat whole. However, some caution when handling a landed fish is in order, though. These fish are strong and have long rows of sharp teeth. Many an angler has needed some bandaging when carelessly ...

If you have ever spent the afternoon fishing for tuna, you know how frustrating it can be. Trolling around the ocean hoping to run across a school of these magnificent game fish is not the best approach.

Here are three things you need to consider before leaving the docks.

1. Control Your Speed - When fishing for tuna, troll at speeds of 5 to 8 miles per hour. Most professionals like to use a typical 'W Pattern' while trolling. This pattern consists of 2 long lines held out on each outrigger, 2 shorter lines held out flat and one deep line straight down the middle. Additionally, it is helpful to display a flashy presentation of multiple lures. The more they splash, sparkle and shine the better. What you want is to trick the tuna into thinking that it has stumbled across a panicked school of bait fish.

2. Pay Attention to Nature - Anytime that you see diving birds, pay special attention. Diving birds typically means that there are schools of bait fish nearby. Where there are bait fish, tuna tend to also be some place close. Additionally, large schools of tuna like to travel near pods of dolphins or sharks.

3. Pay Attention to the Season - During the warmer summer months, tuna love to hunt near the surface of the water. Feeding tuna are easy to spot on clear summer afternoons as the water looks like it is being destroyed from beneath. Additionally, tuna like to ...
