Steering Question

I have a 1700 Lund with a 75hp Merc. If I let go of the steering wheel, it will go right immediately. Does anyone know if there should be a weight or anything on the linkage to slow the steering? It steers just fine, turns easily, etc, just gets old keeping a tight grip on the wheel when moving at speed. Thanks for the help in advance.

first I am not a mechanic but I believe you may want to check 2 things the first is below the cavitation plate @ the back of the motor you should have a fin above your prop it is not very big but it does help with tracking when properly adjusted also some cable ( I assume yours is cable) steering systems have a adjustment knob for tension if it loose this will cause what you are describing, please be very careful when messing with your steering components I have heard of 2 fisherman getting launched from there partners boats due to hard right turns when the driver

let the wheel slip out of his hands at high speed both fisherman fared o.k. but serious injury could occur.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply – I ended up going to the mechanic before I came back to this post, but if I had you might have been able to save me some $$!! This problem ended up just being the cable as you described above… either way I am glad its fixed – I really wouldn't wat to go swiming at high speeds… thanks again… Marker
