What do you like for a top water reels? I have had a few discussions lately on what works best for throwing top water lures ie= speed of retrieve, spinning or baitcasters etc. I think the speed of the newer reels just lack the hp to muscle some of the bass you hook back to the boat.

The question comes down to this HP or Torque?

Thanks

Are you looking for peoples thoughts on retrieve speed or the type of reel? Also what type of baits are you using? My preference of reel for slop is a 5.3.1 winch with a frog and braid. For clearer water or weedlines i like a spinner with a popper and mono. If im working a buzzbait then i will switch to a faster casting reel with fluorocarbon line, Manns Hardnose frogs are fun with this setup also.

The original question was more about favorite reels for top water plugs. I think I am all set with the Frog setup Wink. I know quite a few folks still run topwaters on Baitcasters just to have the extra muscle out of the rods. I have to agree I prefer using the spinning outfits for most topwater.

Thanks

For me this all comes down to the technique which has already been discussed. For the serious tournament angler fitting equipment specific to technique is a must for maximum effectiveness. For the weekend angler that may not be realistic or necessary. I think for a weekend and casual angler one reel would be sufficient. On that premise I would go with a spinning reel due to the fact you could get by using it with any topwater technique. You may drop a fish on occasion but it will function adequately. A baitcaster could be used for some techniques but will be very difficult or impossible to use with others, especially smaller finesse type topwater baits.

As far as what specific type, for a spinning reel I prefer a large diameter spool for increased casting distance and less line twist. If you haven't tried one and are looking for a new reel I highly recommend trying one. I have several different baitcasters I prefer depending on the technique. I will go with a 5.3 for heavier cover and when throwing a buzzbaits or spooks / poppers. Often anglers overwork their buzzbait, sending it speeding past the strike zone. Many times you need to slow that retrieve down and keep the buzzbait in the strike zone as long as possible. If I'm throwing a wake bait I will use a 6.3. But again, personal preference plays a part in reel choice as does type of bait and technique.
