Alabama Rig Illegal in Mass and Vermont

Hi all,

I did some research on the legal use of the Alabama rig. So far I've researched New York, Massachusetts and Vermont. At present it is Illegal in Masachusetts and Vermont when using all five hooks. You can use the rig but only with two hooked baits on it which really defeats the purpose of the rig. You can also put three teaser baits on it, but with no hooks atatched. Be aware of this because if you use it in a tournament with more than two hooked baits your catch will be disqualified! More research in Mass also needs to be done as the use of bait harnesses is illegal, and the rig may be classified as a bait harness, not sure on that yet but I will try to find out.

Funny I see guys using umbrellas rigs all the time on the Ct river in mass when the stripers are running. Of course I see all kinds of people on shore taking stripers under the legal limit. Kinda like gun laws that are only there to persecute the law abiding citizen.

210TIM, I understand your frustration. But there is a reason you are law abiding and they are not. Please don't be frustrated, look at it with a positive spin and say that others may break the laws but I'm proud that I don't. The laws are in palce for those people whom break them, but remember in Massachusetts there are only 200 E.P.O's in the entire state. That is alot of ground to cover with very minimal manpower. They are also responsible for the first 2 miles off shore so they are stratched very thin and can't possibly be everwhere. If you see laws being broken, report the offenders. But it's hard to take your complaining seriously if you see these law breakers and do nothing to try to stop them i.e. calling the authorities. Hope this helps.

Henry,

to be honest with you when I saw people using umbrella rigs I never thought that they were illegal and along comes the Alabama rig and I find out the rigs are illegal I was stating my take on it. I feel that the epo's have more area and less man power then ever before so asking them to do more as with the lead ban is ridiculous.

201tim,

I understand completely. Remember the rig could be used as long as a person uses only two baits with hooks on the rig. The other three arms of the rig can have teaser baits on them, but with no hooks. Otherwise the rig is illegal. Since the purpose of the rig is to throw it with five baits all with hooks, I can't see many people throwing it with just two hooks. I will keep everyone informed on this topic as new information becomes avaliable. Please stay tuned because every state will be addressing this rig now that it's popularity has suddenly skyrocketed. I would suspect several states to ammend their current rules & regulations to either ban or legalize the Alabama Rig and any rig like it. My gut feeling is any state that currently has similar regulations like Mass. and Vermont will be banning this rig or allowing it's use with restrictions. As I find out more I will keep all informed.
