Hello all I have a 14ft alu Starcraft and want to purchase a transom mount trolling motor. I ask different people about the proper size (thrust) and get many different answers.

We usually ride 2 adults and kid dont know if total weight in boat makes a big difference or not.

I have been told a 42 lb thrust is needed any opinions or advice would be great. It wont be long now!!!

Re: trolling motor

Hi, the best advice I can give to you regarding my past experience is to get the biggest thrust motor you can within your budget. this way you can run it on low or medium a majority of the time and when you need the extra power it is there (when the wind really kicks up and your heading right into it, or your river fishing and the currents a little stronger at certain points)  nothing is worse then getting blown back when the wind is ripping and the motor is on high it will ruin your day. I had bought a 36 lb thrust bow mount motor for my bass boat because i got a great deal on it. It worked fine on the calm days  but any vegetation or wind and it was seemingly useless at times. It came off a month later and I upgraded to a minn kota maxxum 55 lb and what a difference!

I hope this helps

Thanks for the info. Sounds really logical and is something I never even thought about.

Hey bud,

For that 12 footer I think a minn kota 55lb. thrust would be perfect. Don't skimp on your battery. Your motor ain't worth a thing without a well charged battery. Try and get your hands on a back up battery too. Your back up doesn't need to be great…just good enough to get you back to shore in the case your main battery goes dead and the wind picks up.  C ya on the water!
